[net.sport.hockey] Michigan schools join WCHA

pal@crystal.ARPA (01/07/84)

It was announced yesterday that Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech
will be joining the WCHA (they are currently in the CCHA) next season,
increasing the number of teams in the league to eight. They have been
accepted, but scheduling problems (involving cross-division play
between the WCHA and the Eastern Superleague) have still to be worked
out. There seems to be a major shake-up going on in college hockey,
with the formation of the Superleague, WCHA-Superleague play, and now
this. Although the CCHA last year rejected a merger proposal with the
WCHA, they may have to think again. With two of their better teams
gone, and the obvious attraction of WCHA-Superleague play, the CCHA
(along with the independent schools) will probably find it difficult to
attract top recruits. The Ivy league schools could also suffer, but my
impression is that they attract a different type of hockey player. An
interesting question now is what will happen to the NCAA playoff format
next year? Any suggestions? Does anybody care? Does anybody read this
group?
