[net.sport.hockey] Call For Entries: NHL Regular Season Pool

rick@ucla-cs.UUCP (10/17/84)

<=== yum yum ===>
Well, the NHL regular season has started and so it is time to hold a hockey
pool. I am willing to moderate the pool as much as is possible from Los
Angeles (we don not get regular stats here so I will need help maintaining
current standings). For those of you not familiar with what I am talking
about here is a description:
About this time of year the so-called "hockey experts" coming crawling
out of the woodwork. In order to prove how clever they are (and usually
to make fools of themselves) they get together to hold a hockey pool.
Basically, each person is assigned a (random) drafting order. In this
order they draft a hockey player (from those not selected yet). In
order to balance out the selections the order of drafting reverses
at the end of each round (so round one goes from 1 to n, round two
goes from n to 1; where n = # of participants). So the first and
last people in the drafting order will get two picks in a row.
Whenever a player that you selected gets a point (goal or assist)
in an NHL game (note: minor league, junior league, or whatever
doesn't count; it is embarassing to have one of your players sent to
the minors where they are no longer getting you any points). You are
responsible for know whether someone is injured at the time, or retired,
or in any way not playing (the others will probably snicker when you
make such a selection though). At the end of the regular season, whoever
has accumulated the most points is the BEEEEEG WEEEENER. (note that points
ARE retroactive to the beginning of the season).
It is not possible to get all the interested netters together so I suggest
the following. Send a list of your selections through the mail (to my
address given below). The list should be ordered from most to least
covetted. When your turn to draft comes up then the highest player
on YOUR list that has not been selected yet is your pick.
So, send to me a list in the following format:
player last name, player first name, team name
For example the first few lines in a list might be:
   Gretzky, Wayne, Edmonton Oilers
   Stastny, Peter, Quebec Nordiques
   Bossy, Milke, New York Islanders
Make sure to put a note on the "Subject" line to let me know that it is
your list so that I do not accidently peek (and get a good laugh :-)).
I promise to not deliberately peek. Your list must include at least 150
different players so that we get a reasonable number of rounds (I don't know
how many people there will be in on this).
In a separate message send to me:
1) should Gretzky be included? I believe he gives too much advantage
to the first person selecting. Even if you vote no put him on your
list since this will be a majority rule.
2) how much should the entry fee be? I suggest $5 (not too much, but enough
   to keep you interested).
3) the winner split. I suggest 75% for the person in first, 25% for second.
4) any other miscellaneous noise you want to send me

When 36 hours have passed with no further entries I will close the contest
and conduct the pool. After the pool I will send the results to all the
participants so you know WHO to cheer for. There should be weekly postings
of the standings after that.
So get those lists to me quick!
