Does anyone have any information on the new broadcasts on either Friday or Sunday to be started in Canada in January? I believe that this hockey broadcast is to be sponsored by the Labatt's Brewery. I just would like to know what channels this will be broadcast on. Here in the US, we can get CBC on cable or sometimes with an antenna, so I'd like to know if this means more hockey for me or not. The CBC affiliate I watch is CBET TV-9 Windsor. Thanks, Tim Newman

The deal has been worked out and all NHL teams except Montreal and Toronto have agreed to it, which is good enough for the games to go ahead, possibly as early as late January. I've heard that it will be a Friday night "game of the week" package; I haven't heard anything about Sunday games. This is certainly good news for Canadians, especially in the Toronto area where the only real games we've been able to see are about one Montreal and two Buffalo games per month. (You can't really call the twice-weekly Maple Leaf telecasts hockey games :-) ) However, it looks like most American fans will be out of luck, because the games will definitely not be on CBC. The Friday night games will be on CTV, and although I haven't heard anything about it so this is just speculation on my part, hopefully The Sports Network will get in on the deal (maybe this is where the Sunday games come in) and give us even more games, because without NHL hockey TSN is pretty useless unless you're a basketball or tennis freak. -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsrgv!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff
