<-- he shoots, he SCORES --> Well, the NHL regular season (or is that really the pre-season) is winding down. Teams are beginning to gear up for the playoffs. Which can only mean one thing: it is time for another hockey pool. I will moderate a playoff pool for those who are interested. You will, if you are interested, send to me, at the electonic mail address below, the following: a list of 100 (one hundred) NHL players. They should be ranked in the order in which you think they will finish in scoring at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Thus you want to take into consideration how many games each team and its players are going to play (ie. Oilers are probably going to play a lot of games, but probably Red Wings probably won't). But be aware that there are ALWAYS upsets in the playoffs. The players on your list must be in the following format: last name, first name, team abbreviation and everything must be in lower case (actually, I will run a program to convert to lower case anyway). Once all the entries are in I will run the draft. A random drafting order of the participants will be determined by drawing names from a hat (or something similar). The first person then gets the top player on his/her list. The second person will get the top play from his/her list that hasn't been chosen already (I suspect Gretzky will top most lists). The draft will continue this way (taking the top undrafted player from subsequent lists) until the last person's turn. That person gets two players in a row and then the draft proceeds back in reverse order, ie. the draft goes 1 -> n, n -> 1, 1 -> n, n -> 1, ... So the first and last people always get two picks in succession. The playoffs begin sometime around April 9 or 10 (I haven't got a schedule handy). I will accept entries until 1 hour before the first playoff game starts, or until I have 10 entries. I will not accept entries after those times. So, if you are afraid the mail will be slow *enter early*. Of course, that means you may not know who will play whom and will make your choices tougher. You must decide how late you can afford to wait. There will be a $5 entry fee to make things interesting (that's $5 'murican to you folks in Canada - about $7 canuck the last I heard). The person whose players amass the most points (goals + assists) in the playoffs will receive 75% of the fee total. Second place will receive the other 25%. So, get out there and make your choices. Oh, when you mail your entries to me make sure that you mention that in the subject line so that I do not accidently peek at your list. Here are the accepted team abbreviations: boston bruins bos buffalo sabres buf calgary flames cal chicago black hawks chi detroit red wings det edmonton oilers edm hartford whalers har los angeles kings los minnesota north stars min montreal canadiens mtl new jersey devils njd new york islanders nyi new york rangers nyr philadelphia flyers phi pittsburgh penguins pit quebec nordiques que st. louis blues stl toronto maple leafs tor vancouver canucks van washington capitals was winnipeg jets win So, a sample list might begin as follows: gretzky, wayne, edm bossy, mike, nyi dionne, marcel, los kurri, jari, edm ... Send list, questions, complaints, flamesm etc. to me: -- Rick Gillespie rick@ucla-cs ...!{cepu|ihnp4|sdcrdcf|ucbvax}!ucla-cs!rick "She turned me into a newt! . . . I got better."
