Well, it's history. The national championship was sitting there waiting for Michigan State in their own backyard and they botched it. First, in reply to Mike Ryan, 5 or 6 thousand RPI fans would be nothing in Joe Louis compared to 15000 MSU fans. Too bad we won't get to see the fan competition. By the way, since MSU is out of the NCAA Final Four, tickets should be available outside Joe Louis for 3 or 4 bucks. If you're in the area, this is a great chance to see a hockey game for next to nothing. Well, I went to MSU last weekend and saw the upset of the season. Saturday, Providence lost to Michigan State 3-2 as Michigan State looked flat, but not as flat as Providence looked. The game was close only because of the great goaltending by Terreri. Most of the game was played in Providence's end of the ice except for a 5 on 3 Providence power play. It looked like Providence tried to just hold Michigan State for most of the game while looking for a few chances to slop one in of their own. The real contest, however, was Saturday. Providence got out to a fast 3-1 lead in the first 5 minutes of the first period. After that, it was the Chris Terreri show. Terreri may be the finest goaltender in the country. He made save after incredible save to keep Providence in the game. Despite getting outshot 52 to 20, Providence did look sharper Sunday -like they wanted the game. The game wound up 4-2 Providence to allow them to win 6-5 on total goals. The game was an exact repeat of BG's 4-3 win over Michigan State earlier this year. Steady defense and goaltending are really Providence's only plusses. They have only Tim Army on offense as there really is little goal scoring threat from anyone else. Both games were marked by poor officiating. The first game was terribly called as the refs let everything slide. The MSU fans were in terrible form as well, as they regularly threw glasses, sieves, and cups onto the ice. With 10 seconds left in the second period, they threw so much debris onto the ice that the game had to be stopped. The teams were sent to the locker room and the rest of the period was played just before the start of the third period. I was ashamed at how tacky the State fans were. The entire ice was littered with cups and cans. Sunday's game saw less trash deposited, but at the end of the game, there still was a lot of stuff thrown onto the ice - most directed at the Providence players. Michigan State fans have long had a reputation for being the rudest people in all of sport, and maybe this is with due cause. The Sunday game also was marked with two heart attacks. One Providence player's father (Tim Sullivan is the player) had to carried out on a stretcher after he had an attack with about 8 minutes left in the game. After the game, a MSU woman also had a heart attack. A MSU sleaze sitting next to me even said : "Look at that guy faking a heart attack. He oughta be arrested." I could not believe this, but it's typical low-class (no class) behavior from the animals in Munn. If you folks ever come to a game at BG, you will be verballed during the game to be certain, but I would like to think that we would not do something without class like the MSU people. The CCHA is NOT a bus/bush league, but the MSU fans are definitely bush league. Tim Newman There's an RPI fight song which goes something like: Sine, cosine, secant, theta, ... ... Dis-INTEGRATE them, RPI! If someone knows the whole song, please send it to me.
