Wrapping up a great college hockey season... No final poll?!?!? Awww... Actually, I was very curious to see where Providence ended up, after coming a goal short of accomplishing about what Villanova did in basketball. Newspaper correction to the All-Tournament Team - RPI defenseman Tim Friday made the team (I was surprised to not see him on it initially). Several college players are heading for the pros. Hobey Baker Award winner Bill Watson of Minnesota-Duluth signed with Chicago. Providence's Steve Rooney has joined the Canadiens, and may play in tonight's (Thursday's) game with Quebec. Tim Army and junior Chris Terreri may sign with New Jersey, and Peter Taglianetti may sign with Winnipeg. I understand Ken Hammond of RPI has signed with LA and will join them immediately, and junior George Servinis is signing with Detroit. Next year's ECAC tournament will be at the Boston Garden; the NCAA Tournament will be at the Providence Civic Center. RPI ought to have more competition next year. Harvard is only losing three seniors, as far as I know, so they should do at least as well as this year as long as Scott Fusco doesn't turn pro. RPI's goaltenders are all staying, and the only significant forward graduating will be captain Mike Sadeghpour (although if George Servinis turns pro it'll hurt). That still leaves Adam Oates, John Carter, Mark Jooris, and several other fine forwards. Defense may be a problem - Ken Hammond, Tim Friday, and Pierre Langevin are all seniors. Mike Dark and Mike Robinson will still be there, but there won't be a whole lot of depth at defense unless some good freshmen are recruited. I do think RPI will stand a good chance of being the first repeat champions since BU (1971-72). Only one team has ever won three in a row: Michigan, 1951-53. It was an excellent season overall. We had the spectacle of an East-West schedule, the rivalry between the ECAC and Hockey East, and some new records set (RPI - longest single season winning streak and John Carter's four consecutive hat tricks, Michigan State - most wins in a season). The league playoffs were very competitive, with Duluth making a second night comeback to win the WCHA title, close games in the ECAC tournament, and the classic Hockey East tournament with Lowell's Cinderella threat and, of course, the Providence-Terreri story which was only beginning with their double-OT championship victory. We had excitement in the NCAA quarter-finals with both Hockey East teams coming from behind in their second games and along with RPI regaining respect for Eastern hockey. And finally, we had a truly classic tournament, with two great triple-OT semi-finals and a closely-fought championship. I'm looking forward to next year, Providence '86: Let's go RED!!! Mike Ryan P.S.: Go Bruins (if only they had Oates, Carter, and Puppa)! -------------------- Please note that this mail message is likely to be incomplete. The sender aborted the transmission.
