[net.sport.hockey] Disallowed Quebec goal

lake@alberta.UUCP (Robert Lake) (05/18/85)

Many Nordique fans may be thinking that the disallowed Quebec goal in game
5 was probably the turning point of the series. My own impression of the
goal (after seeing the replay several times) is that one cannot easily
determine if the puck was intentionally deflected into the net. However,
this does not mean I think the goal should be allowed. I feel the referee
acted correctly, as it was not obviously apparent that the deflection was an
accident, and it is better to disallow such goals than to start a precedent.
Furthermore, I don't think having instant replay available for the referee
would have helped much either, as goals like that can be argued by both sides
for hours, and a quick decision is always required.

Since I've not really had the chance to follow hockey recently
the way I used to, I don't really remember the exact rule on
deflecting the puck in. Anyone out there know the rule? I
think the rule is that the puck cannot be put into the net by
the use of a motion 'towards the net' *regardless* of whether
it was intentional or not (unless of course it was knocked in
by a stick). Matter of fact, I don't think intention has
	anything to do with it.

Case 1: offensive player falls and accidently pushes the puck
with him into the net. If I remember right, this is not allowed.

Case 2: shot comes in from the point. An offensive player is
standing in front of the net, and turns his skate to deflect the
puck (but he doesn't kick it towards the net). The goal is allowed.

Again, I don't think it matters whether it was an accident or not.
But I also feel the ref made the right call. It was kind of a
'bang-bang' play, and it was close . . . Even after seeing the
replay over and over, I'm still not sure whether or not his skate
was moving towards the net when the puck deflected off of it.

	Good luck Phillie.
