I have a friend (his name is Joe) who's an old buddy of Warren Young, and we were trying to figure out what the Wings were doing with him. Joe says that Warren is a great goal scorer (he pointed out his phenomenal 30.8 scoring percentage last season), but he's not much of a playmaker, so he needs a good playmaking centre to set up the plays for him, otherwise his talents will be wasted. Steve Yzerman is the obvious choice. Neither of us has seen the Red Wings play this year nor heard much about them, so we have no idea what line combinations they've tried. I speculated that Young may not get a chance to play with Yzerman since they wouldn't want to break up the highly successful combination of Yzerman & Ogrodnick, and Young and Ogrodnick both play left wing. Joe said they should move one of them to the right side and they'd have one of the best lines in the league. I don't think moving a winger to the other side is a very good idea if he's never played that side before, so assuming both Young and Ogrodnick have to play left wing, Joe and I agree that Young should play with Yzerman since Ogrodnick could probably get along without a playmaking centre better than Young could. Anyway, I'd like to hear some comments from other people on this subject, especially if you know what line combinations the Wings have tried this seasons and have some ideas on why they're not working. -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsri!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff
