[net.sport.hockey] Novice Hockey League

Does anyone out there play in the NNHL (National Novice Hockey League)?
I have thought about it but I would like to know more about it.
Are there fees to play? How much? How much can I expect to spend
on equipment? etc???

Thanks,

I played in the NNHL last year in the "beginner" league (they also have
an "advanced" league for players who went through the beginner league)
of its Chicago-area branch. This is the league that they advertise
(i. e., the league for people who have had little or no skating or
hockey experience).

FEES: The league charged us around $200. This covers an 8-game season,
an 8-week "training period" (in which you learn skating and hockey
basics), playoffs (should your team make them; our league allowed
4 teams in post-season play) and your uniform (a helmet with a cage,
a team jersey and socks). You have to supply any other equipment
you need and if your team wants to practice, you have to pay for
that ice time.

I probably spent more than most players, since I had to buy a new
pair of skates ($150 for CCM Custom Tacks), shoulder pads, new gloves
and a pair of matching Tackla pants ($110). All together, this
amounted to about $300.

The "advanced" league, however, has a longer season (16 or 20 games)
and, as I recall, costs about $230. Of course, you don't have to
go through a training period at this point (you stay on the team
you were with in the beginner league, unless you specify otherwise).

I hope this helps you decide whether the league is for you. Don't
worry about getting your teeth knocked out; the league is very
safety-conscious and does not tolerate "goons."
