Protection is nice because it can keep you from screwing yourself up. I can't say I ever use protection to protect myself from others, but a non-writeable file is safe from the accidental re-use of its name, and that has saved considerable work for me several times. It seems to me that their really wouldn't be that much saving, simply because much of the complexity is part of multi-tasking, which you need. Furthermore, users who make professional (billable) use of their systems might want the appearance of separate users just so that they can bill project time to specific accounts.
