[net.micro.pc] IBM Expansion Unit Problems

Farber@UDel-Relay (04/27/83)

I have just gotten my IBM Expansion Unit with the 10 meg Seagate disk.
Does anyone out there have one? I have had a terrible time getting
one going. I need rapid HELP!!!! When I tried to get it up the
following interesting problems happened.

I did an FDISK then a FORMAT C:/S/V

It then said Format Completed and read the units from the floppy and
then BANG. Write error on the Hard Disk.

I looked and there was COMMAND.COM with 0 length and a CHKDSK showed 5
clusters loose.

Life was fun after that.

I tried a FORMAT without the /S option, then did a MKDIR junk and got
the write error. When I did a DIR junk I saw within junk a directory
junk and ondown to China.

Very very interesting. The hard disk passed the IBM diagnostics, by
the way.

Fix: when I got the COMMAND.COM of 0 length I left it there, renamed
it dont.delete and went on. Seems to have cured it. HMMM. The
current bets are that IBM shipped a bad FDISK in one DOS 2 release OR
it runs into problems with large memory systems.

Anyway, anyone else see this?
