It is my understanding that 96 tpi floppies use a narrower head, and a narrower "tunnel erase", and thus that they do not write very good 48 tpi disks. That is, when a track written by a 96tpi drive (even with 48 tpi spacing) is read on a 48 tpi drive, the signal is very noisy. Reading a normal 48tpi disk on a 96 tpi drive should be ok.
