#N:uiucdcs:24700017:000:558 uiucdcs!donchin Apr 24 12:13:00 1983 I was thinking about how nice it would be if I could nroff files without the hassle of up and downloading them everytime. Or at least downloading them, I can make the change on the vax, but printing needs to be done locally. Then I remembered that all of the source for nroff is in C. Well, Gee, isn't the reason d'etre for doing things in C is to facilitate protability? Unfortunately, I don't have a C compiler myself, but before I really pursue the matter, does anyone see any overwhelming difficulties porting nroff to an IBM PC? Also, is it legal?

From: Lauren Weinstein <vortex!lauren@LBL-CSAM> Unless you have the appropriate Unix source licenses for your IBM-PC, porting of Nroff would be completely illegal, period. Remember that the nroff sources you currently have are via a Unix source license FOR A PARTICULAR LICENSED CPU -- having access to Unix sources or object code does not give you automatic permission to use them on other cpu's. --Lauren--

From: Martin Schoffstall <schoff at BBN-UNIX> I'd like to use nroff on my IBMPC, I don't want the full set just things like indents, paragraphs, page numbering etc. Has anyone done this? I'd especially like the source. I have a lattice C compiler that I can compile it up with. If no one does, I think I remember in "Software Tools" the source for a type of nroff (maybe it was roff). Would anyone like to try to bring it up with me? marty

I heard an anecdote from a person who had worked for Mark Williams the company who wrote the Coherent UNIX(tm) like OS. Apparently the thing they found hardest about writing their nroff, was getting all the bugs in.
