[net.music] Black Coffee - more recorded versions...

trb@drutx.UUCP (BuckleyTR) (04/17/85)

(Only half a cup? I thought you LIKED my coffee!)

It's amazing what I find every time I look through my record
collection (I have over 2000 albums). The other day, in response to
another article, I said I had recorded versions of the song "Black
Coffee" sung by Julie London, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan. I
thought I did, off the top of my head. Guess what? I don't have ANY
of those!

The version by Sarah Vaughan is on a record she did for Columbia in
the 50's. It has a grey cover, but I forget the name. I don't seem
to have this album.

I know I've heard Billie sing it, but I don't have it on any of the
eight VERVE albums and a few Commedore, Decca and Columbia albums of
hers I have.

I have ten Julie London albums, but it's not on any of them.

I have Rosemary Clooney singing it on her Reprise album "Thanks for
Nothing," recorded in the early 60s. It's been reissued in Japan,
though it's hard to get here.

I have Anita O'Day singing it on her album "Angel Eyes" recorded
direct-to-disc in Tokyo in 1978 on Lobster Records. It has been
reissued in the USA on Anita's EMILY records, under the same title.

I also have Peggy Lee singing it on a double album simply entitled
"The Best of Peggy Lee."

I didn't check all my records, so I may have more versions of it. At
any rate, to the person who originally was looking for more versions
of this song, I hope this helps some.

I believe their is another version of Black Coffee by Chris Connor
possibly with Maynard Ferguson on Atlantic.

Yet another really swell version of Black Coffee is by Black Flag, from their
recent album `Slip It In'. This might not be the same song as the one under
discussion...

It should appeal to practically anyone whose tastes lean towards metallic
punk/hardcore.
