IBM today announced the long-awaited Peanut, called PC Junior. It's an 8088 with up to 128 KB of RAM. Standard RAM is 64K. The keyboard is cordless (!), with an infrared interface to the system unit. The basic unit does not come with a floppy disk. Instead, software is installed through plug-in add-on memory. The standard machine has two slots for plug-ins. A floppy is available as an add-on. Prices appear to be about $800 for the minimal unit, $1200 for the machine + floppy. The floppy disks are compatible with the standard PC. Some, but not all, of the existing PC software will run on PCjr. Among things that will not work are APL (no floating point), Pascal (don't know why), the UCSD P-system, and any version of PC-DOS prior to 2.10 (newly announced).
