[net.music] Residents

rlr (05/17/82)

The Residents have done (to my knowledge) only one "dress rehearsal" performance
of music from "Mark of the Mole" (and perhaps "Tunes of Two Cities") in
Santa Monica (?) a few weeks ago. It was covered in a local paper, and it
was stated that they performed with miner's helmet type headpieces on with
flashlights pointing outward which prevented the audience from seeing their
faces. Official word from Ralph---there is no tour, there will be no concerts
in the strict sense. All future performances (scheduled in LA and SF only)
will be of a recital nature, perhaps with dancers and/or audio visual media (?).
Let's hope they broaden their scope and give more performances in more
locations. Rich Rosen pyuxjj!rlr

Has anyone heard the new Residents albums, i.e. "A Tune of Two Cities"
and...the other one whose name escapes me. I like the group but have
been disenchanted with their efforts after "Duck Stab" "Buster and Glen".
Also, does anyone know anything about their planned "tour"?

For that matter, are there any Residents fans out there in netland?
Has anyone else had a religious experience listening to "Constantinople"
for the first time? Did anyone else just about go into fits when "Hello
Skinny" came whispering and moaning into their life?

For those of you in the San Francisco Bay Area:

The Residents are appearing at the Kabuki on October 26.
Get tickets at BASS. Be there or be trapezoidal. Or something.
These guys play once every 4 years or so.

The Residents will also be in the Los Angeles area on Halloween!!!!! They will
play at the Roxy on 10/29-10/30, and at some other club on the 31st!! Also
Penn Gillette, the "entertainer" that they locked in a motel room with all
of the Ralph catalog for six days who came out loving it all (you would too)
will narrate the show.

I am seriously considering going out to LA to see them, as their tour plans
for the east coast have been scuttled for the time being. You should too.

I have attended the L.A. concert and came away convinced that the Residents
are a group of wonderfully talented musitians and performers with an amaizing
gift for absurd and bizzare.

The 2 hour concert was broken into two 45 min sections and an intermission.
The music was from many different albums : "Vileness Fats", "Big Bubble", other
earlier albums. There was a lot of strange performance numbers integrated into
the musical performance. A lot of subtleties are brought into the act that way,
enhancing the live show far beyond anything possible on the record.

The group consisted of a singer ( who also did the rhythm programming ),
guitar player, keyboard player and a few performance people who did some
choreographed stage and mime work and lighting. There was a lot of computer use
in the performance : there were what looked like diskette holders on top of
the rhythm thing (whatever it was!) and the keyboards and the performers kept
swapping the disks.

And yes, Residents DID dress up in funny costumes. All performers (exept for the
guitar player) were masked. The singer at some point appeared in a wig, false
ears and nose and some strange make up - as close as we came to seeing HIS face!
