PRELIMINARY REPORT ON HALF-HEIGHT
DRIVES FOR THE IBM PERSONAL COMPUTER December 21, 1983
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a brief report on a few of the responses I received to my
query posted on the 19th concerning 1/2 height drives for the IBM
Personal computer.

It has been reported that the PCjr uses QUME 1/2 height drives. The
same person who told me this recommended that these drives not be
used.

Another person responding to my query suggested the use of Shugart
half-height drives. This person has met with a great deal of success
using them with his system. He also said that Tandons were fairly
good.

Important note: Someone brought up the point that TEAC half-heights may
have a timing problem with DOS 2.0. They may need an extra delay that 2.0
cannot provide. He couldn't verify this point at all. Anyone knowing more
about this should post a note to the net so that we can all benefit from
their experience.

A friend of mine uses Panasonic 1/2 heights and is very pleased with their
performance. He did note, however, that they tended to be a little noisey
at times.

I'd like to thank Marc Frajola and Phil Burton for helping me in my
quest for 1/2 heights. I'll post a more descriptive message as soon as
I receive more information. Thanks everyone and have a happy holiday and
new year.
