....... I also vote for net.sources.pc. It seems usefull to separate PC programs from UNIX programs. -- Spoken: Judd Rogers Arpa: judd.umcp-cs@CSNet-relay Uucp:...{allegra,seismo}!umcp-cs!judd

Sounds like a good idea to me. Or, what about letting the "pc" part be generic with the specific system for which the code is intended ALWAYS specified in the header? Charlie ...!lanl-a!crs

#R:denelcor:-22900:isrnix:9500015:000:385 isrnix!akp Dec 7 00:28:00 1983 Another one. I have a Lattice C graphics support package for the PC, and enhancements to the VDISK source in the DOS manual which gives unlimited expansion (no funny stuff -- contiguous addressing to B0000) which I would like to post, but which are pretty specialized to put in net.sources. I would vote yes. (Who's doing the tallying?) -- Allan Pratt ...decvax!ihnp4!isrnix!akp

#R:denelcor:-22900:haddock:13600001:000:1007 haddock!stevel Dec 5 12:26:00 1983 net.sources.pc does not solve the problem. Posting programs once only allows them to be picked up if you see them. The program directories on the ARPA net allow one to go get them anytime. What is needed is for someone to maintain a directory of sources and have an automated way for people to retrieve them. Say a mail message the first line of wich is an mail path and the following lines are the programs to send. Any BSD system can make an alias to pass this into a program that would then send the program to the addresse on the first line. It would be nice for net.sources to be handled this way. The first posting could be over the net and then people who missed it or came along later could request a copy. I for one would like to be able to get to the CPM sources on the ARPA net. I can think of several more groups that would like to have archives if the technology were in place to make it happen on the UUCP network. Reading net.news.group lends one to sense that we won't get net.sources.pc until sufficient pc source gets posted to net.sources and thus warrent a breakout into net.sources.pc Keep those cards and letters coming, but in the meantime, folks who have been clammoring for net.sources.pc should prove there is sufficient interest by posting public domain pc source to net.sources (and indicating it is pc, and what HW & SW assumptions are made). I WANT NET.SOURCES.PC!! ALL THE GOOD STUFF IS ON THE ARPANET. Why do we have to ask for this group for a month when net.rec.clown.bozo is formed whenever anyone wants. Tim Kelley, Math. Dept. , N.C. State U.
lmc@denelcor.UUCP (Lyle McElhaney) (12/31/83)
Yeah, I would like it too. But direct your request to net.news.group (or at least a copy of it there), and NOT to net.sources. One problem with this is that there has to be someone with access to those sources who would be willing to copy them onto the net from arpa. In the month or so of discussion, I have heard no one come forward to do that. Of course, we could still fill the group with our own offerings, can't we? Well, does anyone have anything to offer? -- Lyle McElhaney (hao,brl-bmd,nbires,csu-cs,scgvaxd)!denelcor!lmc

Oh yeah, the louder you yell the sooner you'll get what you want. What is the need for net.sources.pc when no one is posting articles which would go in such a newsgroup? Note that people on the ARPANET don't post code, it gets deposited in a central machine which other ARPANET users can access. Since they don't post programs, having net.sources.pc would not give you access to such. Just think of it as a big RCPM system, except you can't dial it. -- Phil Ngai (408) 988-7777 {ucbvax,decwrl,ihnp4,allegra,intelca}!amd70!phil

Could the ARPANET people ocsionally post their code, even, say, to net.micro.pc ?? I would appreciate a calm explanation of the practical problems that prevent sending even the shorter programs to us. There must be good reasons.... - Keremath, care of: Robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1 or: allegra!eosp1
