[net.micro.pc] Need a *good* C compiler

nathan@orstcs.UUCP (03/04/84)

I recommend the Computer Innovations CI C86. They don't have
a lint for it, and they don't support structure passing, but
who does? Code is compact, compiler is fast, and they support
Big model (many don't). Cost is (as I recall) something over $400.

This has probably been asked before, but here goes: Can anyone recommend
a good C compiler? It must run under MSDOS, and be full K&R version 7 C.
Any special packages to perform graphics, mouse interfaces, etc. would
also be useful. Any suggestions, comments, pointers to articles, or
practical experience would surely be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Sorry guys I'm still prejudiced. I like the Lattice C compiler
better than the others. To date it still has the best track
record in terms of code quality (version 1.02 ran the Sieve (yuch!)
in 4.5 seconds (MS-Pacal in 3.5, compiled MS-basic in 5.5 and
an old CI-86 in 7.5). Version 2.0 supports the MS-DOS version 2.00
libraries, the 8087 and the large memory models. FYI: Version 2.1
is due out in a few weeks.

The bad points are that the source to the libraries are still not
included. The libraries were the bad part of the package but are
getting better.

The price is high if you go through traditional sources (Lifeboat),
namely $500.00, but many will sell it cheaper. As a plug for my own
group (SIG/86 - The International MS-DOS User's Group), we have
a contact who is selling copies at about $300.00 each.
