BOSTON, Mass., May 15, 1984 -- National Semiconductor Corporation today announced it has entered into an agreement with IBM's Academic Information Systems Business Unit (ACIS) in which National will supply a version of its GENIX32 operating system. The software, based on Berkeley 4.2bsd UNIX, is being developed by National's Microcomputer Systems Division as an extension of the division's current UNIX activities. IBM's ACIS unit will use the software experimentally in several university projects. ------------- UNIX is a trademark of Bell Laboratories. GENIX32 is a trademark of National Semiconductor Corporation. 4.2bsd was derived from UNIX by the University of California at Berkeley. -- From the closet of anxieties of: Chuq Von Rospach {amd70,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4}!nsc!chuqui (408) 733-2600 x242 I'm sure I have my death ray in here somewhere...

This is not IBM PC based, but a "non-product" developed specifically for programs like MIT's "Project Athena." Whether it will ever turn into anything real is an open question. -- /Steve Dyer decvax!bbncca!sdyer sdyer@bbncca.ARPA

I think you ought to check it out again. NSC was planning GENIX (especially for SYSTEM V) for the 16032 and 32032 before ATHENA. They seemed to feel it was a real product, even if the IBM PC with 16032 co-processor is, indeed, a non-product. I wouldn't leave National looking unreal on account of the peach. I was working for an outfit that bid on the GENIX work about a year ago (in Boston). The opinions expressed are mine, not necessarily those of NSC, TSI, MIT, nor Project Athena.
