I am configuring the directory structure for our new XT and was wondering if anyone had thoughts on how to set things up nice. Right now, I have directories in the root for \usr, \lang, \word and a few others. My strategy is to keep the active directories (\usr in this case) clustered together so that I will only have to backup a small number of directories frequently. \lang and \word will never have to be backed up because the files placed on them will not change from the release diskettes. /usr contains a directory for each person using the XT to keep their personal files localized. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Suggestions for books or articles would help also. Bart Thielges

[blah] I suggest you make a separate subdirectory for all the DOS stuff. THat way its all together and can be accessed using an appropriate path. Just in case some of you don't know, mkdir \dos copy <dos files> \dos path \dos;<etc> Another suggestion: Some older programs don't allow data files to be in separate subdirectories (they don't know about subdirectories). Personally, I like to keep the programs and data files separate. One way to do this is to use the data files on diskette, and copy them to a sub-dir later when you're done. This way you make a backup copy too. (This won't work for huge files that won't fit on the diskettes.) Gunnar Seaburg ...pur-ee!uiucdcs!seaburg
