I have not tried this, but I have on good authority that Microsoft Word can be patched so that it will not initialize the Epson FX-80 when it signs on, as follows: Use DEBUG to change bytes 92A and 92B in (a copy of) the file EPSONFX.PRD to nulls. Otherwise they contain the hex equivalents of <ESC>@ (1B, 40h), which is the Epson reset string. I have also heard tha attempts to print certain ASCII characters will cause MS-Word to bomb, namely 170-173, and perhaps those in the 160's. Also I am told that no matter how ASCII 196 is defined, MS-Word prints the character defined for ASCII 45 (dash). Good luck!
