[net.micro.pc] CU/UUCP under VENIX

jcp@brl-tgr.ARPA (Joe Pistritto <jcp>) (11/30/84)

I visited a friend last week who has a PC running VENIX, but
didn't know much about UNIX. I showed him a few things, then tried
using CU with his Hayes modem. Very strange things happened next.

1) I had to jumper CD high in order to get VENIX to allow the port
to be opened. (I realize the intent of this, and real UNIX does this
as well on terminal lines, but there ought to be some way to override
it in the PC/Autodialer environment).

2) Once I had that fixed, I could not get CU to transmit the 'number'
sequence to the autodialer correctly. If I overrode this and used
the -l option, I couldn't even type the command myself. It would
buffer the line, (the individual characters WEREN'T making it to the
modem), and when I hit return, it would send the line to the modem,
but without a carriage return I think (so the modem didn't do anything).

3) All this time, I could go into MS-DOS and use Crosstalk and the modem
and cabling were fine.1

Is there any way to use CU with a Hayes autodialer??? I haven't even
thought about UUCP yet, as I would like to get the simple things to
work first.
