I have been using SCOUT for a number of months now, and feel that it deserves a plug on the net. SCOUT is for use with hard disks. It lets you assign a drive letter to any directory on any disk and set up a search path for files, just like the PATH environment variable for commands. You can specify these directories as read-only, and add and remove them from the serach path individually. It is most useful with dumb software (of which their is a lot) that does not know about directories and things. For example, we use it extensively, every day, with Pascal MT+ to make our include file directory easily accessible while compiling. It is also useful with programs such as Wordstar, that have to access overlays or help files. We have had absolutely no problems with it. Version 2.0 has just been released and fixes a couple of minor "inconveniences" (I hesitate to call them bugs). It is elegant, easy to use, and works on DOS 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0. Comes with a 35 page instruction booklet, but is virtually self-explanatory. And the best part is - it only costs $24.95 !! They offered to sell me additional licences at the ridiculously low price of $7.50 each! (I couldn't accept that - I felt it was too low, so I paid them $15.) And they have just offered their customers an upgrade for $2.00!!! It was written by Larry Raper of Pittsburgh. Mary Raper seems to run their company, Computer Insights. I first saw SCOUT as an "IBM Internal Use Only" utility called EXT. Contact them at Computer Insights P.O. Box 110097 Pittsburgh, PA 15232 I have no connection with the Rapers or with Computer Insights other than as a VERY satisfied customer. Support these people - they deserve it!
