[net.micro.pc] more Tandy 1000/1200HD info

Here are two pieces of information about the Tandy 1000/1200HD that
have not shown up in discussions in net.micro.pc yet.

1. it does NOT have a socket for an 8087NPU
2. the character generator ROM is soldered in making it *very*
difficult to use something like STSC APL/PLUS*PC which
usually needs its own char gen ROM to put nice APL chars
   on the screen

It is true that the Tandy 1000 does not have a socket for the 8087, but
the Tandy 1200 does. As an interesting sideline, the Tandy 1200 was produced
by Tandon (maker of the hard drive in it) for the now defunct Eagle company.
It is essentially an IBM XT with five full length slots (two occupied by
the hard driver controller, and the floppy drive controller. The character
rom is soldered in, but for most people, this should not be an inconvenience.
Working for a radio shack repair center, I have seen the inside of a bunch of
these machines, and in my opinion, the 1000 is far superior to the 1200. We
have had hard drive failures on the 1200, but there have been few problems
with the 1000. I am hoping that Radio Shack improves the interior design
of the 1200 to eliminate the problems with the hard drive bubble heating up /
this has been the failure of the machines which we have seen/.
