Has anyone in netland tried using a higher frequency crystal in an IBM AT? For more info see the 19 Feb 85 issue of "PC Magazine," the opening column each month. Specific questions for those that know: 1. What quality of crystal, in terms of dstability and "cut," works best. 2. What recommended sources for higher quality crystals, or are crystals pretty "generic." 3. What recommended frequency, 18.000 000 MHz EXACTLY? 4. An unrelated question: Is there a 40 or 40+ Mb AT compatible hard disk on the market yet. I know Mountain makes a 20 Mb that is compatible with the AT cavity and access time. I want more!!! Mb!!! Thanks... please post to net, as I'm sure there are many interested parties. George Darby, Eidetic Technology, Inc. Honolulu, HI

1-3. I would not replace my crystal until my warranty expires as you void your warranty with this "upgrade". I think you will see IBM offer a faster crystal as an IBM upgrade within the next year. You want more hard disk storage? Pick up any recent copy of PC Week or PC magazine. You will be able to find internal drives of at least 100Mb. You will want to make sure you can use all that space through software support as you will probably need multiple logical volumes/drive, etc. If you want external drives I have see an ad for a SMD controller that you can hang a couple of Fujitsu Eagles on ~500Mb each, but cannot find the ad while setting at my terminal, and am not sure what trouble you would have with compatability. (price? hmm seems to me it was about $5K for the controller, and I am not sure of the price of an Eagle) The same board supports several other vendors disk-drives, but again the details are not in front of me at the time. With anything more than 20Mb you will want some back-up device other than the 1.2Mb floppy-drive and many of the vendors offer systems with tape-backup. Greg German uiucdcs!uiucuxc!german

--- ddt Since the AT's 80286 is not rated for any speed above 6Mhz. It is purely by luck that some 80286's run at higher clock speeds. I was told that as of 2 months ago Intel had never yet sold a 80286 over 6Mhz. It will be unlikely that IBM will upgrade the clock crystal unless it upgrades the 80286 in the machine.
