[net.micro.pc] 256K RAM chips work in AT&T PC?

reza0@ihlpl.UUCP (r. zarafshar) (03/19/85)

Does anyone out there in the net land know if 256K RAM chips work
in the empty sockets of AT&T PC 6300 on the Motherboard?

I have heard rumors that it does and if so one can have full
RAM (640Kbytes) right on the motherboard without wasting a slot
and pay the high cost of buying a board.

If you have any info on this I would appreciate it if you would send
me mail and let me know.

Thanks,

Yes they do work! I just found out from AT&T that they do work
they have to be 150 nSec chips and you have to change the
switch setting on the mother board. The setting is as follows

	Switch 0-1 off
	Switch 0-2 on
	Switch 0-3 off
	Switch 0-4 off

I looked at the Byte magazine ads and found out that these chips
are around $18-$20 a piece. Considering how much it costs to buy
a memory board and that one expansion slot is wasted I think it definitley
is a good deal.

It's an even better deal if you check the Hardware Mart section of PC/Week,
where 256K, 150ns chips were just advertised for $6.25 in quantity one!

Has anyone actually installed these chips? If so, are there any cautions.
