[net.micro.pc] cheap modem card

lsmith@ut-ngp.UUCP (lsmith) (04/29/85)

In the latest Byte magazine, there was a full-page ad for a 1200 baud
modem card for the PC for $198. I tore it out to look into it further,
but it blew out the window (21st floor)! Would someone please send
me the info? I think the name was something like info-mate. Anybody
heard of it? trust it?

I just happen to have a copy on my desk. The company is called Sunnyvale
communications Company
1308 Borregas Avenue
Sunnyval California
94088-3565

I bought a modem from CERMETEK at the same address a while back, the
INFO MATE PC212 plug in card and it is GREAT. The construction is good,
The software they send is OK, and all in all I am quite happy. This is
a Hayes compatible version of what I have I suspect. The company has
been reliable in all the dealings I have heard about with them. They
make custom modem parts for a lot of other people too.

OOPS, forgot... the price was 198 plus $4 for shipping per card. Check, Visa, Mastercard

I bought a 300/1200 baud modem from a company called Business Computer
Network in Carlsbad, CA (area code 619) about three months ago for $211,
including shipping, sales tax, and cable. It is an external modem (I already
had two serial ports in my PC, and didn't want to stuff another card
in), and appears to be a private label Anchor Automation Volksmodem 1200.
The first one BCN shipped me didn't work reliably, but they were very
good about taking it back, and the second one has worked fine. It supports
the most important parts of the Hayes command set.
