[net.micro.pc] Autocad and CAD/CAE - survey results

jeff@wjvax.UUCP (Jeff Albom) (05/10/85)

Here are some responses I received on the CAD/CAE pc survey. Some of the
responses are from the vendors themselves and telephone numbers have been
included so you can find out more about the systems. Most of the responses
have been shortened and, as such, do not include specific advantages/dis-
advantages of the individual products. Some opinions were left in since
they were useful to me (and maybe to others, too).

RESPONSE 1

>Daisy Systems Corp. manufactures CAE systems which run both on our hardware and
>on the IBM PC-XT and IBM PC-AT...
>... (415) 960-6818 and I'll be happy to bend your ear for a bit. (We invented
>the CAE industry so be ready for a long phone call!)

RESPONSE 2

>We have Anvil 1000MD running here on an IBM AT. It is an excellent drafting
>program. It displays 32 colors at once, with each entity (point, line, arc,
>other curves) having setable attributes of: color, level, font, and weight.
>We are using it for design/drafting of our enclosures for electronic
>equipment. The software is EXCELLENT, originally based on ANVIL 4000 which
>runs on mainframe computers. This is important because most of the PC based
>CAD packages are really "toys"....

>anvil hotline 1-800-932-9329
>russ runge	(408) 559-1557 mcs anvil cad for drafting

RESPONSE 3

>> I've seen AutoCad running on a Tandy 2000, looks very impressive! Appears
>> to be extremely easy to use, even the Tandy sales rep could handle it :-).
>>
>the company i worked for this past summer and winter use both AutoCad
>and AutoCad II. Both applications are on a 512K IBM w/ a math co-processor
>chip, a hitachi digitizer, a houston instruments plotter, and a 20MB external
>hard disk. This makes an excellent workstation...

RESPONSE 4

>REcent experiences with CAD packages:
>
>	el cheapo: "ProDesign" from American Small Business Computers of
>	Tulsa. Costs $295 list. Does a creditable job. Compiled basic,
>	requires 512 and is a little slow. Handles plotter well, dot matrix
>	not so well.
>
>	CadPlan: real fancy, with special bells and whistles for architecture
>	"You want a window here? How big? Done!"
>	Well done manual; requires hardware copy protect device that must be
>	on COM1. Cost $1500 plus options. Fastest screen writing I have ever
>	seen on a 8088 machine.
>
>	AutoCad: the old reliable. Costs $1000, with 2 $500 extensions avail.
>	large book full of 3rd party add-ons, the one which provides a hook
>	from into dBase III caught my eye. Not copy protected. No dot matrix
>	support. This is the one I chose.
