[net.micro.pc] Fortran compiler info needed

pier@ur-univax.UUCP (05/10/85)

A friend of mine would like to buy a FORTRAN compiler for his PC and does
not know which is best. Any experience (good or bad) are welcome here.
Please give any information you might find relevant like
	- good compatibility with F77
	- speed
	- price
	- ....

If there is enough interest, .....

I have used Microsoft fortran and it looks pretty good, It is a little
confusing to get started with since there are a lot of different
library options depending on whether you are using integer math, have a
math co=processor, the phase of the moon... It seems pretty reasonable.

The IBM professional fortran by ryan McFarland or someone like that looks like
a disappointment. It REQUIRES a math co-processor ($200 silicon blob) and I
heard horror stories of inaccuracies in the library routines (10**-3) at the
SHARE in LA this spring.

I recommend Microsoft over the IBM one. Oh well... (IBM costs more too)
