[net.micro.pc] XENIX-AT woes

We have tried to install XENIX version 1.00 on PC-AT's with 3 different
types of hard disks with nothing close to success. The drives and problems
are:

Tulin 32Mbyte (type 3) : writes the badtrack table, partitions the disk,
and writes the system to hard disk ok. The next step is to reboot
from the hard disk and continue installation. This fails with a
	HD_ERROR cylinder 2 track 5 sector 17 drive 0
	REC_NOT_FND: requested sector not found
	segment read error: 65535.
Added this sector to bad track table. Same error.
Wrote the system to different spot on disk. Same error at different
location but at the same location relative to start of system.
Tulin doesn't seem to care yet.

Univation 30Mbyte (type 8) : Wouldn't run badtrack. Patched two instances of
the diskinfo table on the installation diskette using the DR
(disk repair) program that's part of the IBM Professional Debug
Facility. Changed the entry for type 8 to reflect the correct number
of cylinders and heads. These tables are located (on my copy) at:
		Track 0x1A Sector 5 head 0 offset 0x1f4 and
		      0x1B 3 1 0x150
This got badtrack to run ok and the partition seems ok but
when the system was written to the hard disk tons of errors ensued.
Error 10 status 51 on hd01 for assorted and sundry disk locations.

MicroScience 20Mbyte (type 2) : Hey, this is the same type as Big Blue's
	scarce disks. Still no luck.

Exchanged many questions with AskInfo in Boca Raton before the answer we
feared was given: IBM does not support XENIX on non-IBM hard disks.
Microsoft retail said: "All rights to XENIX have been sold to IBM." ??
Microsoft oem said: "We can only sell XENIX to manufacturers and oem's."
	Same for sources.
Microsoft technical said: "All retail support for XENIX is provided by the
	oem's and manufacturers."
Univation said: "We'll buy the sources today and call you back."
MicroScience said:"We can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work."
Tulin said: "XENIX?"

All of these disk have been running for months with DOS 3.0/.1 with no failures.
The XENIX documentation sure looks nice and all the tools are there. Is
IBM going to get away with this. Can anyone offer any advice or assistance?
It bothers me that noone else i? having these problems on the net. Does
everyone else have drives blessed by IBM.

I had heard that you could use another drive as long as Xenix booted off
of an IBM drive. There was something about it in the Arpanet bboard
INFO-IBM.PC. Somebody had the same sort of troubles, ended up using a 20
mb drive in c: and a 32 mb drive as d:. I know I was planning to do this.

Have you tried this configuration? Does anybody know if it works?
(Please, before I spend my money needlessly.)
