[net.micro.pc] microscience and other hard drive noise

andy@sdcarl.UUCP (Andrew Voelkel) (05/29/85)

I have seen contradictory stories about the amount of noise the microscience
drives produce. I have had two experiences and am still curious.
Case 1 is a 10 meg installed in a Compaq. The drive is mounted to
shock mounts which is good for not transmitting noise to the case. The
noise is not at all bothersome, much quieter than the fan.
Case 2 is a 20 meg installed in my compatible with an ibm-like
case. It is screwed right to the case, which could transmit noise to
the sheet metal I suppose. This drive is not unbearable (about as loud
as the fan) but is somewhat annoying. Covering up the area where the drives
are with a telephone book help considerably.
My question is, could the 20meg be louder than the 10meg, or is
it the case causing the problem. Also, is there a quieter one this cheap?
($699). I was attracted to the Microscience because of the plated media
as I plan to move it around quite a bit. I'm especially interested in
finding this out because I have 30 days to return it if I want. Thanks
for any answers in advance
