If you want to duke it out over the merits of a 680x0 versus the 80X8Y then call each other on the 'phone and pay your *own* interconnect charges. But quit polluting this forum with all the trash! Nobody reads your stuff objectively, 'cause we all realize that it isn't *generated* objectively. . I feel compelled to point out that, although much of it is bickering, this discussion includes relatively few participants from the vendors. I know of 1 person posting from Motorola here, and a couple from Intel and AMD. The rest are interested (and opinionated) third parties.

The Motorola and Intel guys talking to each other are a lot of fun,
I think. They are often humorous (at the others expense), subtle,
and informative at the same time. And often someone from the outside
chimes in with a question to which they each have their answer
and point of view. I think we are all better off being able to listen
in on this discussion than otherwise. I know I am.

This ongoing argument between the two camps has turned out to be fairly enlightening. While those involved may be arguing religeous issues there have been more than just a couple of good articles that have really had a little depth to them. If you aren't here to discuss or read on the comparisons of different architectures, then why are you here?? I would like to give each of them a (software) knife and let them go at each other. In fact, I would like to see more of the unix benchmarks run on different systems that use the different processors, esp the 320xx folks who seem to have been (wisely) silent through all of this. My reasoning is this: I am a poor slum who cannot afford any of these systems right now. I am constantly looking at the market, however, and interested in how things are going. I know that currently I can pick up an IBM PC/AT with XENIX (5.0 supposedly this summer) and disk, etc, swap the crystal around and get a 10 mhz system up and running for 3.5K. The cheapest 68000 system that I have seen in the same class is the ATT 7300 which I can pick up for around 5K - 5.5K in this area (Atlanta). Price makes a big difference and there is going to be a lot of software coming out of PC/AT's and XENIX simply because they will sell more machines than most other folks (that stupid BIG BLUE backing). I may not like it, but it is a fact. Support will be local, hardware will be cheaper, and probably software cheaper, too. What are other folks opinions.
