[net.micro.pc] pc - at xtal source ?

dewa@ur-univax.UUCP (07/24/85)

I am interested in speeding up my PC -AT. I read the letters concerning
the speed up withh interest. Lately, I have noticed a number of
advertisements in PC Week magazine offering crystals of about 16MHz
but for ridiculous prices like $50!! I hope some one in the netland
can point me to a cheap source for a 18 MHz crystal. Furthermore,
how does one specify the packaging of the crystal so that it
will plop right down in my AT?

		Thanks

I got my 18.4 mhz xtal from DigiKey for $2.25. It's pretty easy to
order--they have life-size templates for the two sizes of xtal they
sell, and the HC-18 casing is exactly the size of the AT xtal.
These don't have the "fat leads" of the IBM, requiring folding over
of the leads to make them thick enough to seat snugly in the socket.
Some have said that this is prone to failures, but mine worked first
time and I haven't had a problem. They also have 15, 16, 18, 20 and 22
mhz xtals for the more (and less) fearless. For the price, it's hard
not to give it a try.

They can be reached by 1-800-344-4539. MC and VISA. I don't have
much experience ordering from them, but I had no problem with this order;
they were fast and efficient.
