PC6300 users:

What follows is an article I wrote for the Computer Club. If you have a
hard disk it may be something you will need to know.

  RE: SHUGART Hard disk whine

Some AT&T PC6300s with a SHUGART model 706 or model 712 hard disk may
start to whine. This whine results from a lack of lubrication of the
spindle ground button. A lubrication kit is available from:

          Hamilton-Avnet Electronics
          19515 South Vermont
          Torrence, Calif. 90502
          1-800-521-3387

A lube kit consisting of a syringe of lubricant and a rubber wedge
retails for about a buck and a half. The instructions say it takes 20
minutes, but 45 minutes is more in line. Here's the crux of the
  instructions:

          A. Remove drive from box and unpack.

          B. Place drive on bench with PCB facing upward

          C. Take wedging tool and carefully insert the thin end just
under the narrow end of the ground flexure. Once the wedging
tool is in place, gently roll it downward until the thick
end is flat against the PCB and the ground button is raised
             up off the button bearing.

          D. Observe at a close distance the area under th flexure. The
ground button bearing (round ball on motor)should be visible

          E. Using the syringe filled with lubricant, insert the tip of
the needle directly over the ground button bearing and
release a small bead of lubricant approximately the size
of a pinhead on to the top of the button bearing.

          F. Lower the ground button onto the bearing and carefully
             remove the wedging tool.

One potential source of confusion is the syringe of lubricant itself.
It only contains about two drops of lubricant, so when you unpack the
kit and the syringe appears to be empty, it isn't!
