I'd like a couple of desktop acessories for the IBM-PC: (1) a calculator that
doesn't have a bunch of dumb useless buttons on it (like a window to "bc"),
(2) a text editor like sidekick's without the rest of sidekick's junk, and (3)
a terminal emulator. Has anybody written one of these? If not, would anybody
else pay money for them? Has anybody got a skeleton desk-acc program in 'C'
like the one for the Mac recently published in net.sources.mac? Has anyone
used the terminate-and-stay-resident function from 'C'? How do you tell if
you're in MS-DOS? How do you trap keys? That's the hard part, I've got enough
docs to do the rest.

There is a company called Bellsoft that makes the following
pop-up programs available:
Alarm Clock (lets you set alarms- up to 5)
PopDOS (gives a window with limited DOS options)
TeleComm (pop-up communications)
Calendar
Notepad
Calculator
All of these are separate, and you can purchase them in various
groupings. I seem to recall that the prices are all within the $5 to $50
range, the alarm clock being the cheapest and the communications being
most expensive. You can reach the company at:
Bellsoft, Inc.
2820 Northrup Way
Bellevue, WA 98004
(206) 828-7282
I'm not affiliated with them at all, just received a promotional
brochure from them in the mail.

I purchased the "Desk Set", which includes everything except modem communications. I bought directly from them (payed $5 s+h) and received the package via UPS in about a week. I unpacked the box yesterday and tried them today. Things seem to work pretty much as advertised, although I haven't given them a full test by any means. I called their tech support hotline with a couple of questions (I called them before buying, as well.) and got friendly response and helpful answers. I found out that a new version came out something like two days after mine was shipped, that the normal upgrade cost is $20 (original price was about $70), but they're giving me a deal since they came out with a new version before I even got their shipment. They said that the main difference in the new version is that Note and Clip have been combined into Word, which is really snazzy. I can hardly wait to see. Anyway, they seem to work on the AT&T PC 6300. I can't say anything for 6300-compatibles. -- Ron Heiby (NAC|ihnp4!cuae2!heiby) Moderator: mod.newprod, mod.unix AT&T-IS, /app/eng, Lisle, IL (312) 810-6109

I don't know about other desk accessories, but I have used Sidekick from Borland International and can not stand it. As far as I can see it is a piece of junk. Jerry Pournelle of Byte Mag. and some other magazines have had rave reviews of it and I disagree and I really think they did not put it into a good test. The problems that I have noticed are: 1- If you delete an appointment and try to print the appointments for that day, it dumps the core on your printer. I called them about this. Their response: it is a known bug. Will you fix it?, maybe maybe not. I hardly think this is a small bug. It is a serious one. Jerry Pournell and others who say they cann't do without it should spend a little bit more time with the stupid thing. 2- It has serious problems being resident with programs such as mailmerge of wordstar, etc. This isn't a small problem. I have said enough. Caveat Emptor!!!!!! Reza Zarafshar (312)970-5104 ihnp4!ihlpl!reza0 Opinions are of my own and I am solely responsible for them.
