I have a freeware copy of a program called "PCWindow" from Creative Freeware Unlimited. It includes a pop-up notepad, similar to most of the pop-up notepads. It works fine unless I read or save a file--then when I return to DOS, the keyboard is frozen. The keyboard doesn't freeze if I don't read or save a file, and it doesn't freeze if I call the notepad from a program that bypasses the normal DOS keyboard handling (e.g. it works fine with PC-Write). I'm using a Leading Edge PC, which is alleged to be a 99 44/100% pure PC-compatible. Does anyone know where the problem is? I wrote Creative Freeware, and never got a reply. If it can be fixed easily (I'm not averse to patching with debug), fine; otherwise I suppose I ought to break down and buy some commercial program. (You get what you pay for? :-) ) -- Mike Maxwell

[Description of PCwindow freezing when trying to save a file if it was called from DOS.] Sounds like PCwindow isn't making sure it's not called from DOS. Since DOS is not re-entrant, if it's called from DOS and you make a DOS call it'll do nasty things which can well include freezing. Get SideKick. It checks, it's cheap enough (even if it's not freeware), and it's a better program (I tried PCwindow but the only think of any use was the notepad and it's pretty poor). PS: If you try to call SideKick while you're in DOS it beeps at you and you have to try again. -- Peter da Silva (the mad Australian werewolf) UUCP: ...!shell!neuro1!{hyd-ptd,baylor,datafac}!peter MCI: PDASILVA; CIS: 70216,1076
