I am considering the purchase of an IBMPC Jr. The price is falling very low, and I am looking for a good basic computer. I currently own a Commodore 64, and would like to upgrade to the PC Jr. I am soliciting opinions, and would appreciate hearing from anyone that owns or has had experience with the JR. Also, if anyone has information on whether or not IBM is going to continue supporting th PC Jr. Thank you very much, Kevin Campbell kevin@gitpyr -- Kevin Campbell Georgia Insitute of Technology, Atlanta Georgia, 30332 ...!{akgua,allegra,amd,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo,ut-ngp}!gatech!gitpyr!kevin

The good news is that the PCJr, with enough add-on memory, is sufficiently compatible with the PC family to run a wide variety of programs. Problems occasionally arise with some (only some) copy-protection schemes which assume the the drive controller has DMA. Thus, if you're looking for an inexpensive PC clone, the PCJr, sufficiently discounted (like < $600), is a very good deal. The bad news is that makers of add-on boards are quite justifiably dropping the Jr from their plans. If you're looking to expand the Jr, do it now. Also, the lack of DMA can be a pain: keyboard accesses are disallowed during disk accesses. -- /Steve Dyer {harvard,seismo}!bbnccv!bbncc5!sdyer sdyer@bbncc5.ARPA
