I have recently purchased MS-DOS 3.0 from Compaq and I have a couple of questions. First, how can I tell if my copy already has the backup/restore bug patched or not? I have made a couple of trial backup - restore sequences with full success, is this a sufficient demonstration of correctness, or is the bug intermittent? Second, the format utility that came with it has a strange bug. After it finishes formatting a diskette it hangs the system, forcing me to reboot. Luckily, I still have the DOS 2.1 disk that came with my system and copied the format utility off of it, and it works. It is also about 25% smaller, so I suspect it is lacking something the newer version has. Anyone have any ideas on this? -- Sarima (Stanley Friesen) {trwrb|allegra|cbosgd|hplabs|ihnp4|aero!uscvax!akgua}!sdcrdcf!psivax!friesen or {ttdica|quad1|bellcore|scgvaxd}!psivax!friesen

RE: DOS 3 format vs dos 2 - Support for 16 bit fats on hard disks may have something to do with added size,,,also, Compaq most likely does the same as IBM - makes one HUGE program (or OS for that matter) that will run on all of their machines (generally via test&branch on ROM ID)..so it is a little slower and a LOT bigger, but is easier on the inventory control program :-) -- Opinions expressed are public domain, and do not belong to Lotus Development Corp. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Simcha-Yitzchak Lerner {genrad|ihnp4|ima}!wjh12!talcott!sesame!slerner {cbosgd|harvard}!talcott!sesame!slerner slerner%sesame@harvard.ARPA
