I have an older (very much so) IBM PC. It consists of single sided floppies and whatever boot roms were associated with the PC's three years ago (or so). I would like to upgrade the pc with a reasonably priced hard disk. I'm kind of just getting back into this after somewhat of a long absence. Hence, I haven't really kept up to date on all the latest and greatest developments. A quick scan thru the back of BYTE seems to indicate that a 10Meg winnie, controller, cables and upgraded power supply (for an internally mounted unit) can be had for about $700. I saw an ad from Priority 1 Elx for a double sided floppy for $60. Anybody got any thoughts on the differences between the different hard disks that are being offered nowadays? I would like my resulting upgraded sytem to be "totally IBM compatible" and it seems to me that a couple of years ago, the disk manufacturers also had to sell you hacks to MS (PC) DOS so that the winnie could be recognized. I'd like to avoid that, if possible, but is that too much to ask? I'm sure I have one of the older power supplies (65 watts, I believe). Is there a winnie available that can work with my present ps? Has anyone had any experience with the ps upgrades available in the back of BYTE, or for that matter, any ps upgrades? Is there anything more that I should take into consideration? Proms? System board mods? What about reliability (ps and winnie) and speed (winnie)? I can be running either 3.0 or 2.xx as I am running 1.1 now and intend to buy the OS to match the new hw configuration. Sorry for the windy query. If there is enough interest (send e-mail) I will post relevant findings. Thanks in advance..... David Chinn
