Recently I downloaded hack.lbr (notice that it is not .exe or .com)
from a local board..... What do I do to the file since it is labled
.lbr? Is there some kind of an extracting program made for this type
of thing?

The ".lbr" extension indicates that this is a "library" file, which
contains several files. The files in the library may also be "squeezed"
(compressed) for faster downloading time. You will need a program called
"lu" (or possibly "lue") to extract the individual files from the library.
Most recent versions of this program will also unsqueeze where necessary.
The BBS from which you obtained the file should also contain the necessary
extraction utilites.

I learned all this from the Compuserve IBM SIG. I recently bought a
"Compuserve Starter Kit" from my local software store for $30. Included
was $30 of connect time. I've spent the last week downloading software
from their "data libraries" - they have a _lot_ of stuff, much of it of
good quality. If like me you got tired of redialing your local IBM RBBS in
the hope of getting some good free software (eventually I was willing to
settle for making a connection) then try Compuserve; I think you'll be
pleasantly surprised.

(Usual disclaimer: I'm not connected in any way with Compuserve - just a
recent and satisfied subscriber who's run up $50 in connect charges in one
week.)
