I am seriously considering getting a 5MB SyQuest removable cartridge hard disk,
along with a Xebec 1210A controller for my Zenith Z-158, which is IBM PC com-
patible. I am interested in this disk drive because for my application I need
something that will not get damaged so easily with a power outage. I don't
have money right now to buy a continuous-duty battery-backed power supply,
which is really what I need. Does anyone have any comments on this setup?
Eventually, I would like to get a hard disk proper, such as the one advertised
in BYTE by CORE International, which is made by Control Data. Unfortunately,
the 21MB size, which is the smallest one they have, costs $1500, and it doesn't
quite yet work with an IBM PC, only with an AT.

I used one in a Tecmar Expansion chassis. The first one I had literally burned up after about 5 months of use. I bought another one from Tecmar since the Syquest warranty had expired, and this second one could never get up to speed. Tecmar sent me another three drives all of which had some problem or another. Eventually, because my chassis was still under warranty, send me one of their QIC-60H 60 meg tape backups in place of the Syquest. This speaks well of Tecmar but not of Syquest. In checking around with some local retailers, I found that they had also had some problems with Syquest drives. Others, may have had better luck. If you get good feedback from others, I would nonetheless suggest that you don't use the removeable drive the same way you would a hard disk. It just doesn't seem intended to stand up to constant use. The usual disclaimer: I am not associated with either Tecmar or Syquest.
