Recent rumor mill (PCWeek) stated that the new PROMS being used in PC/ATs (with the IBM 30mB disk as well new 68 and 99 models) will make replacement of the crystal difficult or impossible. They go to state that the PROMS change a timing loop, but offer no other substantiation of this claim. I believe that the PROM has been modified, but what evidence is there that this causes the previously mentioned problems? If this is true, I for one would interpret it as a hostile action by IBM. There is no way that they can convince me that limiting the capabilities of my machine is for my own good. I am grateful for the open architechture at least. It would not be the first time I was forced to kludge around one of their "fixes". -- Gerald Lotto - Harvard Chemistry Dept.
