[] And now the final chapter in the continuing saga of our hero's attempt to bring peace to his IBM AT, Xenix, the Enhanced Graphics adapter, and monochrome monitor. It appears that Big Blue comes to the rescue again, but only with great reluctance. There is a document floating around an internal IBM bulletin board (described to me as a "Hone flash") which details a simple patch to the Xenix file which fixes the problem completely. The campus IBM rep insisted I not share the contents of the document (something about EGA monochrome being an "unsupported option"). I suspect, however, that most universities with IBM connections will be able to get the same document. The monochrome patch was written by Tom Wasik ("WASIK at POKMCR"), and comes in three parts. The papers I received were headed "EGAMONO DOC A1 (191 ) 9/19/85", "XENIX MONOLOG A1 (191 ) 8/05/85", and "XENIX MONO A1 (191 ) 8/05/85". The first of these gives complete instructions for the patch. The third is the patch itself - a script file for adb. The second is a log of the adb session. Note that this fix requires two items - access to a standard monochrome or color graphics adapter to implement the patch; and the Xenix development system (which contains adb).
