[net.micro.pc] Reliability statistics anyone?

blair@hslrswi.UUCP (Hamish Blair) (10/16/85)

Does anyone have any comparative statistics of reliability for machines
                     -----------
compatible with the IBM PC/XT? I mean comparisons between computers
                                                   -------
like IBM PC/XT, Compaq Deskpro, Kaypro 16, Apricot Xi, NCR PC, Ericsson PC
etc.? How often do the machines fail completely or partially (Mean Time
Between Failure)? Which parts fail the most often? and so on.

If you can help, please mail to me at ...mcvax!cernvax!hslrswi!hslraxe!blair

I am interested in facts. However since suppliers vary so much round the
world, leave facts about suppliers out.

If any coherent picture emerges, I will try and find time to summarize
to the net.

RE: Compaq protable and Compaq Plus:

The power supplies on these machines is a little marginal in terms of
capacity. Too many option cards in the system can tax them. I know
of a lot of power supplies dieing, to the extent that one firm with a
lot of compaqs in use keeps a case of replacement power supplies on hand.

The deskpro, and both 286 machines have much larger power supplies, so
they should have no problem. Otherwise, I have never heard of any compaq
problems.

I have had absolutely no response to my request for reliability
statistics, so there is nothing to summarize.

All sorts of conclusions could be drawn from this, such as a hypothesis
that Usenet is a figment of a computer's imagination...

Or that when someone says he might, if we are lucky, find
time to summarize, the people on the net aren't enthused about
finding time to respond to his request....
