There are a huge number of Squeeze and Unsqueeze (usually abbreviated SQ and USQ) programs written for the IBM PC in languages such as Pascal, C, and assembler. Most of them follow the same, standardized format for compressed files. They create binary files considerably smaller than the original files, and undoubtedly the C or Pascal versions could be easily converted for use on a Unix computer. Once the file is squeezed, it can be transmitted with an Xmodem or Kermit program. If you want to get some SQ and USQ programs for the PC, I suggest calling Gene Plantz's bulletin board in Chicago. *nix versions of sq and usq have been posted to the net as xsq.c and xusq.c. Experimental versions with 6 bit output (ideal for 7 bit Kermits) are in ksq.c and kusq.c. The following command uucp omen!/usr/spool/uucppublic/FILES /tmp will get you an up to date listing of the available files for downloading.
