What you haven't realized is that this company is ripping you off. I called NEC and asked for some documentation on the V20 and V30 chips. The next day, I received full specifications for both of the chips by Federal Express. This was free (not $3.00). Included with the spec sheets was a list of retailers and distributors. Choosing one at random (RM Electronics to be exact), I placed an order for two of the little monsters (8Mhz, ceramic) at $17.95 each. Two weeks later I received them C.O.D.. Fifteen minutes later it was inside my IBM PC (the real thing, not a clone). This process resulted in a 15% improvement in the dhrystone benchmark program; 396 dhrystones/sec before and 462 dhrystones/sec afterward. I have also noticed a big improvement in RAM disk speed and display speed. Beyond that, I cannot say that the V20 is doing much better than the 8088. I hope that this clears things up a bit. - Tim Iverson - iverson@cory.berkeley.EDU iverson@cory.berkeley.UUCP ... etc.
