[net.micro.pc] Query: Need printer spooler for PC/AT

dubois@uwmacc.UUCP (Paul DuBois) (12/27/85)

I am asking this someone who has a PC/AT with hard disk, DOS 3.0, and I
hope that's all I need to know to get an answer! She wants to be able
to spool output to the printer (I believe it's the standard Centronics
parallel interface). If you have had any experience with this, EITHER
hardware or software solutions, please let me know. If you need
additional system specs, let me know and I'll get them.

As I understand the PRINT command, you have to actually say PRINT [filename]
to get something spooled that way. That is insufficient. What my query-er
is looking for (actually, my interpretation of what she's looking for) is:

(a) A program that can just be loaded in at boot time that will automatically
intercept EVERYTHING sent to the printer and shove them at the printer
at its own speed. Presumably this will have to be something that patches
the printer driver? (Best if this can be done with a command that can
be put in the autoexec file (or whatever it's called), rather than one
that you have to answer a whole bunch of prompts for every time.)
If you know about one of these: who makes it, how much does it cost,
is it buffersize configurable, and if you've used it, how do you like it?

(b) A card/box that can be plugged in/on. If you know about one of these,
please say also what has to be done to get it to activate (repeat comment
inside parentheses in above paragraph.)
If you know about one of these: who makes it, how much does it cost,
and if you've used it, how do you like it?

Thank you in advance to anyone who responds. Please respond by mail,
however, since I don't normally read this newsgroup (I have a Macintosh,
so I guess that makes me an infidel). If I get a bunch of replies,
though, I'll summarize and post, for other people's information.
