[net.micro.pc] Offensive to those who hate Commercial Announcements

greenber@phri.UUCP (Ross Greenberg) (01/21/86)

WARNING:
THIS IS A COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. If you hate commercial announcements,
please hit the 'n' key now....

I'm pleased to announce the availability of TransNet, my background
communications processor.

TransNet sits in your IBM-PC's memory, gobbling less than 64K, and
enables you to initiate and receive XMODEM files while you are busy
doing your normal data processing in the foreground, uninterrupted
by the transfer taking place in the background.

It works with virtually any modem, and can work with any of the software
controlled dumb switches that are commercially available.

It works at baud rates upto 19.2K, and will probably work at 56Kb shortly.

TransNet allows you to run a bulletin board in the background as well.
My TransNet bulletin board can be reached at (212)-889-6438 and you
can give it a shot with login id: demo and password:demo (in lowercase)

TransNet has an E-mail facility built into it which is of similiar
syntax to UNIX (tm) E-Mail. Within a short while it will allow
UUCP transfers, but it does not as of yet.

Various users of TransNet are using it in small offices as a cheap
local area file transfer network. One site has thirty copies of
TransNet running though an IDS switch at 19.2K and are pretty happy
with the low memory requirements and the functionality of the product.

Onto the sell:

If you think you'd be interested in TransNet, then you'll be pleased to
know that I'm offering it to you for only $10! The normal retail and
mail-order price for it is $80. For the $10, you'll get two copies.

Why am I offering it for such a cheap price and risking so many flames?
I could tell you something altruistic, but that would be deceitful.

I'm doing it because of the cost of advertising: a small ad in the
back classified section of InfoWorld costs $1,200! A full page in
Byte or any journal like it can cost as much as $10,000!

And after almost a year of work on TransNet, I simply can't afford it.

I'm hoping that you'll grab up this offer to get two copies of TransNet
for less than a tenth of the retail price. I'm hoping that you'll
use it, be as happy with it as I am, and tell others about it. And
I'm hoping that these others will buy quite a few copies --- at the
regular retail price --- and tell their friends, employers and user
groups about it. And that everybody who hears about will buy it and
that I'll be able to buy a small island in the Med, and never have
to work again. You'll all be invited for brief holidays on the
island, of course! :-)

If you find that you don't enjoy TransNet, or it doesn't serve your
purpose, I'll refund your money immediately upon you telling me by
returning you copies to me.

Anyway, if you're interesting in more information, drop me a note
at ihnp4!allegra!phri!sysdes!greenber. I'll forward the blurb sheet
to you, which basically tells you about TransNet in even more glowing,
PR-type wording. Or you can call me at (212)-889-6431 (voice), and
I'll sing the praises of TransNet in person.

If you are interested in getting a copy immediately, send your check
or money order to me as soon as you can. I reserve the right to withdraw
this offer at anytime, by the way. The address to send to is:

Thanks for your time. And please restrain yourself from any flames
regarding the non-commercial nature of the net. I've sent a few of them
myself to others who have posted just as I have.

Except now I understand why.....

Unless you require some kind of special hardware...I don't know how you
are able to do this...Last time I looked the 8250 max'd out at 19.2Kb.
