I have in my possession already version 5.1 of ARC. In the newest form, it's distributed as ARC51.COM (an self-unpacking archive, very neat and efficiently bootstrapping its way out of the .COM file when you run it to create ARC.EXE and ARC.DOC. Since archives made with the new version aren't readable by 4.x, I'd hold off on converting willy-nilly to the new 5.x version for a little while. Distribute the new unpacker to others, but let the version spread for a little while before repacking old archives. There are distinct performance improvements with 5.x over 4.x. Files are 5-10% smaller, and speed is better by ca. 20%. --Ed Edward Vielmetti, Computing Center Microgroup, U of Michigan emv%UMich-MTS.Mailnet@MIT-Multics.ARPA <-- tried and true ..!ihnp4!umich!madvax!emv <--new, I'm not sure of it yet "The price of progress is incompatibility."
